Tips Every Pool Owner Should Know

Summer is just around the corner, and so is the swim season. It is time to open the pools and clean them to make them summer-ready. But after a long no-pool period, you might just need a refresher on pool maintenance, and some other essential tips just before the summers come in full swing.

Here are some tips that might come in handy:

1. Regularly skim your pool.

No matter what, things like debris, leaves, dirt, and pesky insects will get into your pool and obstruct your smooth swimming experience. And if ignored, they will sink to the bottom of the pool and eventually get caught in the strainer baskets. This makes skimming your pool regularly crucial. After skimming using a long net, clean the strainer baskets and wash off the excess build-up.

2. Vacuum your pool.

Vacuuming your pool once a week is another must! It will help you remove the dirt particles you could not get rid of with the long net. When you vacuum, remember to keep your pace slower to avoid stirring up the dirt at the bottom of the pool. While you are at it, hand-brush the walls to remove dirt or algae.

3. Maintain your water levels.

You might not realize, but evaporation and normal wear and tear can result in a significant loss of water. To avoid this, check your water levels every week and don't let them get below the skimmer to keep pump damage at bay. If the water levels are low, use a garden hose to increase them.

4. Shock your pool.

Shocking the pool simply refers to raising the chlorine levels to kill the bacteria. You can either do this at least twice a season or whenever you feel that the water is murky. To avoid over or under-chlorinating, dilute the chlorine into a bucket of warm water before pouring it into the pool. For best results, only shock your pool at night because the sun burns off chlorine at approximately one part per million (ppm) per hour.

5. Backwash your filter every once a month.

Depending on the amount of debris your pool collects, backwashing your filter once a month will retain its efficiency. The method of backwashing will depend on the type of filter you have. However, in general, you will have to remove all the build-up dirt that can clog the pipes.
