Pool Maintenance — 3 Things You Should Do at Least Once a Year

Want to enjoy swimming in a sterile and sparkling pool? You will have to spare some time to perform routine pool maintenance. No, we are not talking about the general upkeep—which is often limited to the expelling of trash, leaves, and bugs. We are talking about a thorough yearly scrub-down.

To keep your pool shimmering and ensure the well-being of all your family members, you will have to make a yearly upkeep plan for vigorously and deeply cleaning your pool. Here are the three most essential things that this yearly pool deep cleaning plan should include:

Clean filters

Pool filters go through a lot during the swim season. As we use the pool almost daily in the summers, our pool filters have to labor a lot to keep the pool’s water crystal clear. They have to bear the brunt of all the impurities and debris, and, sadly, we forget to take good care of these workhorses. If you want optimal performance, you will have to include cleaning your filters in your yearly pool upkeep schedule. Failing to clean your filters will only result in dropping release levels and dwindled efficiency.

Filtration systems, such as sand filters, can be easily cleaned by backwashing using a hosepipe. Simply spray clean water in the opposite direction to wash off all the clogged material. For fabric or mesh type of filtration systems, all you need to do is dismantle them and thoroughly wash away the unwanted material that is blocking the seamless flow of water.

Brush and scrub the pool

Cleaning the filters will give you flowing clean water, but what about the ugly brownish or yellowish stains on your pool. Aren’t they ruining the look of your pool? If you leave these stains and slimes as is, then also get ready to see them accumulate at the base of your pool or maybe onto the walls and develop into algae. Therefore, brushing and scrubbing the pool is a must-do! To start cleaning, empty your pool of all water and, using huge brushes with vacuum suckers and scrubbers, clean the base and walls of your pool. You will have to vigorously brush the concrete and tiles to remove the powdery material that collects at the bottom.

If those brown stains are overly stubborn, then you might even have to use cleaning agents to remove them. Keep cleaning until you see the glow of your pool return. Let the pool dry out under the sun to ensure the complete elimination of bacteria and germs.

Preserve water quality

For a safe swim, you will have to keep the pool water quality under check. Ideal pool water has the right balance of pH levels and calcium hardness. If the pH level of your water is 7, it means that it is neutral, but anything above 7 means alkaline, and below 7 means acidic. You should aim for a pH level between 7 and 7.6 because if anyone swims in the 8-pH level water, they are at a higher risk of developing skin rashes. On the other hand, if anyone swims in the below 7-pH level water, it can sting their eyes.

Calcium hardness, the second important factor determining your pool’s water quality, refers to the amount of mineral calcium dissolved in the water. While high calcium levels will leave a ‘scum’ on your pool’s surface, low levels can deteriorate your pool’s surface. Therefore, maintaining the right balance is essential.
