How Clean Is Your Pool Filter?
Your pool filter is one of the main components that keep your pool clean. But what if this very cleaning instrument is dirty itself? Will it be able to perform the task that it is supposed to efficiently? Probably not. Therefore, to keep your pool clean and remove the dirt and oils, you have to pay close attention to the filters. If you have no idea when and how to clean your pool filter, read on.
What does a pool filter do?
We all know that a pool filter keeps your pool healthy by clearing out all the dirt, dust, and debris from the pool. If left unfiltered, these dirt, dust, and debris particles can invite bigger (read: more expensive) problems down the line. But let us get into the details and mechanics of how your pool water is filtered. Pool filters force the water through a material that is porous enough to allow the water through, and at the same time, condensed enough to trap the unwanted objects trying to pass through along with the water.
When should I clean my filter?
The exact answer to this question will depend on the type of filter you have because every filter has different needs and maintenance requirements. If you are using sand filters, you might need to put weekly backwashing on your to-do list. On the other hand, if you have DE (Diatomaceous Earth) filters, you will need to clean them with specialized products at the beginning of every season. Lastly, Cartridge filters will need cleaning weekly, monthly, or less frequently depending on the pool usage frequency and size.
So, generally, filters require cleaning every six months. One deep cleaning every six months is sufficient so long as you are using the right kind of filter and there are no extenuating circumstances, such as bad algae bloom and more people swimming in the pool than usual.
Having said that, there is no “one-size-fits-all” answer as to when you should clean your filters.
You will get to know that it is time to clean your filters when you see a noticeable change in the water quality. Another telltale sign is when the filter pressure gauge indicates a number of 10+ pounds per square inch (psi). This simply means that your pool has to be cleaned. Just remember that the lower the pressure, the cleaner your pool.
