In-ground Vs. Above Ground Pool Filters — What’s the Difference?
All filters filter water, right? Then why should I choose different filters for my above-ground pool and in-ground pool? Yes, both filters essentially have the same job—they draw water from the pool using a skimmer and pump it through the filter tank and its media (sand, DE, or cartridge). However, there are many differences between both these filters that you will have to consider to buy the right pool filter.
In-ground pool filters
These filters are large enough to allow a higher flow rate and are designed to handle large volumes of water; efficient in-ground filters can process up to 10,000 gallons of pool water per hour. A right-sized in-ground pool filter should filter the entire pool water in 6 to 8 hours.
Above-ground pool filters
These filters are smaller versions of in-ground filters, and they operate in the same manner. There is a wide variety of above-ground pool filters, from under 3,000 gallons to over 20,000 gallons. Their filter system includes a pool filter and pump with a filter system base. You can even buy pumps and filters separately.
Differences between in-ground and above ground pool filters
Pool plumbing
Usually, above-ground pools have their filter systems right next to them. The filter, pump, and motor are located below the water level. So, the filter system is on the ground, and the hose from the skimmer feeds directly down into the pump. Then, the filtered water returns up to the pool’s return jet.
In contrast, in-ground pools have to do more feet of pumping and plumbing. Their natural enemy is gravity and air pressure because they have to work against them pretty much all the time. They even have multiple skimmers, jets, and suction lines.
Size
Pool size and filter size are the most essential points to consider when deciding which pool filter to buy. Though an above-ground filter can filter 20,000 gallons of pool water, you still cannot buy it for your in-ground pool. Here’s why.
In-ground pool filters are made to efficiently push water through 100 plus feet of piping. They create sufficient circulation in the pool to push water down 6 or 8 feet and pull it back up again. Additionally, they are designed to get the water 25 to 30 feet in different directions. Above-ground pumps are inefficient at doing all this pushing and pulling water because they are not made for that purpose.
