Variable Motor July Deadline
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) focuses on the minimum energy efficiency standards for homes and businesses. In this regard, DOE has taken the initiative to encourage people to use energy-efficient appliances. This recent mandate of DOE has to do with the pool pumps that people use in their houses.
Pool pumps are the second-most energy consumers of all households. Therefore, DOE has announced that from 19 July 2021, energy-efficient variable speed pumps will be required for all installation of in-ground pool filter pumps.
This new pool pump law involved inputs from various sources, such as manufacturers, utility companies, consumer groups, and trade associations. Considering all the circumstances, The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy produced a document in September 2018 entitled “Energy Conservation Standards for Dedicated-Purpose Pool Pump Motors.”
Why variable pumps?
A variable speed pump can save anywhere between 40% and 80% on your utility bills as it consumes less energy. You can use the pump at a low speed most of the time and only increase the speed for filtering, cleaning, or heating purposes.
What does it mean for you?
You do not have to replace your current pool pump unless it fails or damages. If you have to get your damaged pump replaced after 19 July, you will have to buy a variable speed pool pump over 0.711 Hydraulic Horsepower (HHP), i.e., approximately 1.15 Horsepower.
What is Hydraulic Horsepower?
Hydraulic Horsepower is the actual measuring unit for a pool pump. It indicates the amount of water a pump can push to and through the swimming pool. The 2021 regulations state that any single-speed pool pump that operates at 0.710 HHP or lower meets the guidelines. However, any speed pump that operates over 0.711 HHP requires variable speed technology.
Even though you need not switch to an energy-efficient variable speed pump if your single-speed pump meets the guidelines, it is better that you still make the transition. This will save you a significant amount of money on your monthly electricity bills.
Are there any exceptions?
Currently, DOE is concerned explicitly with pumps used on in-ground pools, and the mandate does not apply to the following:
