Pool Openings & Inspections

Spring is nigh, and you would want to open your pools after a long break. However, when people open their pools, they are often welcomed by algae-infested water or even murky white clouds. And if you want to dive right in and relax in your pool, you will first have to clean up the hiatus-induced mess.

Given below are some of the essential tips to make your swimming pools ready for the swim season.

1. Run down the pool equipment checklist

Before you initiate the process of cleaning and restoration, you will have to get the right equipment for efficient cleaning. You will need specialized instruments to fish out leaves and bugs and to brush your pool walls.

You might even have the equipment with you already, but to be on the safer side, we are listing the key instruments that you would need:

  • Water test kit
  • Pool opening chemicals
  • Skimmer
  • Pool brush
  • Pool vacuum (head+hose)
  • Telescopic pole

2. Open the pool early

It is better to open your pool early so that you are in no rush even if you do not have all the necessary equipment or your pool is dirty. If you open it a little before the advent of the swim season, you will have enough time to buy the essential equipment and can take your own sweet time to clean your pool thoroughly.

3. Inspect your pool pump

Make sure to inspect your pump and run it well before you plan to open your pool. This will give you plenty of time to address all your pump-related problems and will ensure that your pool runs at maximum efficiency during the spring and summer seasons.

4. Inspect and clean your filter

Though you have dealt with the problems of the pump, your filter could still be dirty. So, open the filter, remove the inner filter media and rinse it off. This is the basic procedure of cleaning filters, and it can differ as per your filter’s type.

5. Inspect your pool heater

Pool heaters are essential if you live in colder areas and are opening your pool a little early. Not only can a pool heater keep your water from freezing, but it will also help your pool maintain a steady temperature. You will need a pool heater even if you open a little late to deal with the occasional chilly days. Therefore, service your heater ahead of time.

6. Shock your pool

From cloudy water to algae infestations, many pool problems can be treated by shocking the pool. Pool shock refers to giving your pool a super-powered dose of sanitizer.

7. Test and balance your water

You need to test your water to determine the chemicals required to restore the pool water’s balance. Check for the pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and calcium hardness.
