What is a Variable Speed Motor and why are they preferable?

Every swimming pool needs a pump to circulate water through filter and sanitization systems. That being said, pool pumps can be one of the (if not THE) biggest energy consumers in your home and therefore the primary culprit of increased energy bills.

With a simple upgrade to variable speed motors, though, you can change that! In this blog, we will look at what exactly variable speed motors are and why you should consider investing in one.

The fundamental difference between single speed and variable speed pumps

In simple words, single speed pumps are pool pumps that run at a non-adjustable, full-rated horsepower speed of 3450 RPM until you turn them off. Hence the name “single” speed pump.

On the other hand, a variable speed pump uses a permanent magnet motor that can be programmed to run at different speeds at different times. They are much quieter than single speed pumps, allowing a full range of speeds to fine-tune the flow rate.

You will typically find single speed pumps installed in swimming pools, but they are not energy efficient because they run at a higher speed all the time than most pools need.

Advantages of using a variable speed pool pump

1. Energy efficiency

Standard induction motors use additional electricity to perform the required functions instead of magnetic motors in variable speed pumps. As a result, variable speed pumps consume less amount of energy than single speed pumps at the same flow rate.

2. Less noise

Conventional pool pumps make a lot of noise and thus, cannot be left running overnight. This is not the case with variable speed pumps, though, as they are much quieter and can be left running 24/7 without causing any disturbance.

3. Better pool filtration

Operating the pump at a higher speed can negatively impact the efficiency of its filtration system. However, as variable speed pumps run at a much lower speed, the filtration system is less likely to suffer wear and tear and more likely to work effectively for a longer period. This not only gives you a cleaner pool, but also preserves the life of your pump’s filter.

4. Cost savings

Although the upfront cost of variable speed pumps is considerably higher than conventional pumps, you can save a lot of money in the long run by reducing your electricity bills by a significant proportion.
