Pools with Man’s Best Friend

Summertime means spending a lot of time hanging out with family and friends at the pool. Many of us have a four-legged friend or two that we consider one of the family and don’t think twice about letting them accompany us poolside. But have you ever wondered if swimming in a pool is safe for your dog or what the effects of chlorine have on them?

Water & Pool Solutions not only wants to keep your family safe this summer but also your furry loved ones by providing tips for including your dog in your poolside fun this summer.
Pools with Man's Best Friend
Many dogs like to cool off with a dip in the pool just like their human family but a lot of people ask if chlorine is safe for pets. The simple answer is the amount of chlorine used in most swimming pools are safe for dogs to swim in. Pools contain a very diluted amount of chlorine so it’s very uncommon for the chlorine to cause poisoning to a dog or even a human. Although, just like humans can have reactions to chlorine, pets can as well. A dog’s eyes, nose and ears are more sensitive to the effects of chlorine than a human. Also, chlorine causes a hazard to pets when it is in its tablet form so it’s important to take proper precautions when storing chlorine.

Here are a more few tips to keep your best friend cool and safe this summer.
  • Make sure your dog knows how to swim. Just because they are of a certain breed, they may not like swimming or be comfortable in the water. Build confidence with your dog if it’s their first time in the water. They may panic the first time, but teach them where the steps are in case they want to get out.
  • Just like children, never leave your dog unsupervised in the pool. The biggest risk to dogs swimming is drowning so it’s important to keep an eye out for them just like you would for your own family.
  • Make sure your pet knows how to exit the pool. If they are unsure of how to get out, exhaustion may set in and they may start swallowing pool water.
  • A swimming pool may look like a giant water bowl to a dog but it’s important to avoid having your dog drink large amounts of pool water.
  • Summer brings the heat. Have a shady area near by where your pet can rehydrate and cool off.
  • Rinse your dog off after they spend the day in the pool to rinse off any chemicals. Most dog ear infections are caused by wet and damp ears not the chlorine itself. Be sure to help pat dry their ears after swimming. Also, swimming in a pool can cause red eyes in a dog and itchy or dry skin.
