Is My Swimming Pool Leaking Water?
Losing pool water is a common phenomenon—you lose some of it to evaporation, some to backwash, and some to splash-out. But, sometimes, people are unable to distinguish between leakage and natural loss of water. To save you from this confusion and misinterpretation, here are some telltale signs of a pool leakage every pool owner should know about.
Changes in the water level
The most obvious sign of pool leakage is dropping water levels. To know if the dropping levels are due to evaporation, you will have to know the evaporation rate, which depends on your area’s wind, air, and water temperature. And if evaporation is not the cause, then the excess water loss is probably due to a leak.
Wet spots in the yard
If you come across some mushy patches of uneven grass growth around your pool area, do not overlook them because they are indicators of pool leakage. The underground water movement is causing a shift in your landscape.
Fluctuating chemical levels
Do you notice a sudden inexplicable drop in the chemical levels of your pool? This can be a sign of a leak. As water leaks, it carries the pool chemicals out of the pool. To make up for the loss of chemicals within the pool, you add more chemicals than usual. So, if there is a leak, you will never be able to keep your pool’s chemical levels steady.
Algae growth
Because your pool’s chemical levels are unstable, it becomes a great breeding ground for algae. So, if you are seeing algae developing in your pool at a fast pace and turning your pool water green, it could indicate a leak problem.
Cracks and falling of tiles
The presence of excess water unsettles the ground, which, in turn, results in tile movement. So, if you see any cracks on the tiles of your pool, make sure to call a professional to get the problem diagnosed and repaired.
Water under equipment
Another common and sure sign of a leak is the presence of standing water or corrosion at the pump or near the pipes. You need not be an expert to look for this sign, and a simple visual inspection is enough to tell you that your pool is leaking.
Perform the evaporation test to confirm
To confirm the leak, you can perform the most common bucket test. Take a 5-gallon bucket and place it on the second step of your pool. Fill this bucket with water such that the bucket’s water level and your pool’s water level match. With a marker or duct tape, mark the water level inside the bucket. Now, turn off the circulation of your pool and wait for a few days. If the water levels of your bucket and pool are the same, it means both have evaporated equally, and there are no leaks. But if the pool has lost a significant amount of water, then there is certainly a leak.
