Today we bring you Part 2 and share more tips on how to winterize your pool properly. You can follow up these tips from the previous ones and make sure your pool is ready for the colder months. Here we go!
Manage the Water LevelYou don’t have to follow this step if you live in a warm, dry climate. The reason to manage and lower the water level is to avoid pool damage due to freezing or overflowing. It only invites expensive repair works and is time consuming. You need to control the water level below the tile border or the skimmer’s edge or whichever is lower in case you have both. Remember to check the pool in case there is rain during the winter. No matter how well you cover it, water can seep through the covers.
Backwash the Pool FilterYou need to let the pump run for a full cycle and then backwash and clean the filters. Do this step carefully if you don’t want debris and bacteria stuck in your screen during the winter. We don’t have to tell you that dirty filters in the winter only means dirty work in the summer. Check all your filters to make sure they are clean. After cleaning them, store your filters in a dry place.
Empty the Pool Lines and Add AntifreezeFor those living in cold parts of the country, blow and empty all the water from pipes, filters, and pumps. The process will help you prevent damage to the pool due to freezing water and, thus, save your money. But be careful. If you are hesitant in doing it yourself, you should call the experts. The pool plumbing is not designed to handle excessive pressure; hence, blowing the pipes is a tricky process.
Storing Pool AccessoriesWhen closing your pool for the season, make sure to remove, wash, and store your pool accessories. You don’t want to leave anything installed in the pool and then cost you dearly when you open next season. All those chemicals you used in the pool will damage the accessories you left installed like ladders. Once they start to corrode, the rust will enter the pool. And it will only lead to more headaches next season. So, unless you have a custom-made pool cover that securely fits around rails and ladders, it is a good idea that you remove them. It will allow the cover to fit correctly and save your pool from the environment.
Covering Your poolCovering your pool will protect it from foreign contaminants and rough weather and prevent any accidents. You can opt for a regular winter cover to protect your pool from the cold. Or you can buy a pool safety cover which protects the pool from elements and keep people from falling in.
ConclusionFollow all these steps, and there will be less chance you have an unwanted surprise waiting next summer. But if you think these are too much to do, then don’t shy away from hiring a professional to do it.
