ADA Compliance - Part 1

While most of us have packed away the swim trunks and flip-flops and opted for scarves and wool hats this winter, it’s not too early to begin planning for the hot, summer months. Swimming pools are a great way to beat the summer heat for people of all ages and all abilities.

Did you know that in 2010 the Americans Disabilities Act was updated to include that recreational pools must provide a handicap accessible entrance and exit. Pools that must be accessible include municipalities, schools, hotels, health clubs and government facilities. Private facilities that sell tickets or memberships to the public must also comply, including community pools if it is made available to the public for rent. Facilities that don’t comply can face civil penalties of up to $55,000. Water & Pool Solutions can assist you in making the necessary equipment upgrades to ensure that your public pool is compliant this summer.

For public pools, to ensure compliance, it must have either a slopped entry or lift as a primary access point. Wading pools must have a slopped entry and spas must have a lift.

When upgrading older pools, a stand-alone lift may be the most convenient and cost effective option. Lifts gently lower and raise a patron in and out of the pool. The downside to the lift is that it only allows for one patron at a time to be moved. Lifts must have a lifting capacity of 300 pounds, have a seat of at least 16 inches in width, and the user must be able to operate, without assistance, from the deck or the water.

If you are building a new pool, a ramp, is the most convenient option. A gradual ramp that leads into the water will allow elderly and disabled patrons a safe way to enter and exit the pool.

Don’t forget that in addition to making your pool ADA compliant, Water & Pool Solutions provides numerous services including repairs, maintenance and equipment upgrades. This winter as you are enjoying your hot tub, make sure to drain it down and clean it out during times of higher use to avoid skin irritation or excess build up of chloramines in the water.

Also, don’t wait until the last minute to make your repairs or schedule services for this spring and summer. Prices of pool products generally see an increase in price around February and March.
